Did you know that the very first amendment to the Indian Constitution was made as early as 18th June 1951?

The Constituent Assembly of India adopted this Constitution on 26 November 1949 and became effective on 26 January 1950.

The Constitution was amended in just over one year (on 18 June 1951) of its adoption! Speaks of the lack of proper consideration before adoption.

The amendment (schedule 9) encroached on property rights, freedom of speech and equality before law.

On 1st May 1953, Parliament removed the upper population limit for a parliamentary constituency by amending Art. 81(1)b.

Consequence: Even before the term of the first Lok Sabha completed its term, the politicians  realised they did not want the ‘distance’ of the MP from the people shouldn’t be so small that they were approachable by the common man! This and later amendments are to have serious political consequences in the decades that followed. The lack of understanding of these far reaching stipulations on the power structure in the Lok Sabha were seemingly absent.
