Haryana by itself gave India the most medals, many of them Gold.
Haryana has the reputation of being “ruled” by extra-constitutional “Khap Panchayats” that dispense tribal, archaic justice with no heed to India’s constitution and its laws.
In recent times, the Khap Panchayats have come under severe criticism for killing it’s women who run away to marry or marry within the same “Gotra”. Ancient Hindu belief is that people with the same Gotra are brothers and sisters and should not marry each other.
Yet from this same state come a family of sisters who won medals for India in wrestling. A poor farmer who had only girls (sons are the children of ‘choice’ in this Hindu heartland) and who was a wrestler of sorts himself, trained these girls in the middle of all their daily chores in the farm and the house. On mats of straw and cow sheds instead of gyms for pull ups and push ups.
This is the story of The Wrestling Sisters. Who brought India glory.
