In the early days of the Band phenomenon, it used to be a challenge and adventure to get to work and governments tried to honour their oath to uphold the constitution and guarantee freedom of movement.
In time, Bandhs became the chessboard for political parties to show or test their strength. They inevitably turned violent and people, being helpless against the hooligans unleashed on the streets, stayed home for fear of physical damage to themselves and property.
These days, parties announce Bandhs well in advance so that people can plan their extra holidays in advance and enjoy long week ends. With India probably having the maximum no. of paid holidays, Bandhs disrupting work has become of little significance. Even 24/7 call centres now have a clause in their contracts with overseas clients reckoning work disruptions.
Bharat Band is now really Open Holiday. #FamilyDay
And like all Indian ‘rules’ even the Bharat Bandh is a work to rule. The Bandh is upto 6pm, though it fizzles out after lunch time.
Happy Family Day, fellow Indians!
