Why Modi will bring Petroleum and Alcohol under GST on Oct 2, thus slashing prices.

The hue and cry over petrol prices by BJP’s vote base, the middle class is high decibel. It won’t be lost on Modi or Amit Shah, that too, just ahead of important elections in the Northern States.

The Congress hypocrisy in shutting down states ruled by itself like Karnataka does not fetch it any goodwill. The public knows it’s trying hard to stoke anger, hatred and communalism while accusing the BJP of these!

It makes no sense to forsake the immediate impact for a “long-term” solution when the ballot box is around the corner. Notwithstanding Modi’s commitment to true and lasting change, he’s an astute politician.

The prospect of losing the government in any or all of the three large states going to polls in November 2018, will mean a loss of thumping majority in the  GST Council. That’ll mean all that he wants to do in terms of sops to the sections of the electorate that would hopefully vote for him must be done before the Election Code kicks in – possibly in October.

It seems to me that a sweeping change in prices out of petroleum and liquor products could come on Gandhi Jayanti – October 2nd, 2018.
