The Communists are truly on the run, not just from West Bengal, but from New Delhi as well. The “allegation” that Anna is a media creation smacks of extreme pique. It also hides the real threat that politicians face: a popular movement with wide spread support from all corners and sections of society.
World media covered the Arab spring for the same reason that Indian media covered India Against Corruption: for its massive support by people at large. This leads to the logical question: How come a politically non-involved middle class hit the streets? What made them leave heir hum-drum-mundane-comfy lives and bear the heat, dust and congestion of street side rallies?
The CONGRESS, of course!
How? By squandering their bigger mandate in UPA2, completely ignoring popular-and-just demands of the people while running up record breaking scams and then seen to be protecting scamsters. To ensure the Anna phenomenon stayed strong, the CONGRESS ensured timely booster doses in terms of jailing Anna, evicting Baba Ramdev in the dead of night, etc etc.
The latest dose of adrenaline pumped in by the CONGRESS to keep the Anna phenomenon strong as ever is to present a pathetic lokpal bill, containing things the Supreme court will be sure to strike down and hence derail the Lokpal itself. We are sure to see more free fuel for the Anna fire. It is almost certain the Congree wants to ensure Annaji becomes the second Father of the Nation.
The Indian media covered the Anna phenomenon for the same reason global media covered the Arab spring – and continues to do so: Mass Popular Movement, bringing the sleepy, self preoccipied and hitherto selfish middle class out on to the street, braving the sun, dust and acute congestion of crowds. Any channel NOT covering the IAC would have been sent to TRP oblivion.
The Media can beat their chests all they want if it makes them feel selfworthy.
