TV and other mass media have become very critical in life today. Of that there ought to be no doubt in anybody’s mind.
Given the far reach and influence in moulding public opinion, known also as the 4th estate or pillar of democracy, it becomes incumbent that such a powerful medium has laws, regulators and norms to follow – in operation and ownership.
The film Rann I believe was about how “news” is manufactured based on the whims and fancy of a select few. It is said cinema mirrors society and vice-versa. For good reason!
For example, one English 24/7 TV Channel is totally driven by the ideology of the INC. As are some of its main anchors. I’m sure there are others (which I dont watch) that are similarly propaganda agents for other political parties.
While they are all “free” to adopt any ideology within the boundaries of our constitution, is it not high time that they make full disclosures of their political or ideological or religious leanings or agendas?
Like a streamer that scrolls at the bottom every hour or some such period? Just like they (TV) are quick to show disclaimer screens after some programmes (like stock exchange programs or reality shows) that “protect” their interests?
How about protecting the interests of viewers that give them their TRPs?
As a corallary, employess of the channel must have the right to refuse to act or say something that the employee does not want to say or do on the basis that it goes against their conscience. An objection on the grounds of conscience.
And it must prevent the channel from firing that employee. After all, isnt that what you’d expect a soldier to do if ordered to fire at point blank range at an unarmed Jehadist by a Saffron Hardliner Commander?
When will Manmohan Singh and his INC Government act to bring laws and Regulator to protect the Aam Admi against this menace?
Unfortunately, its possible that MMS will have to act first against his own party’s mouthpiece. LOL.
